Director Joey Strickland was appointed to head the Arizona
Department of Veterans’ Services by Governor Janet Napolitano in July 2008 after
serving more than 10 years as the Deputy Secretary and Executive Director of the
Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, responsible for overseeing five
veterans’ nursing homes, one state veterans’ cemetery and the Department’s
administrative and claims divisions.
Director Strickland, who is American Indian of Choctaw-Cherokee-Lumbee descent,
also served as Louisiana Director of Indian Affairs from 1996 to 2004, and
served on several state commissions including the Governor’s Military Advisory
Board. In May 1995, he was selected from 80 candidates to serve as Louisiana
State Director of Troops to Teachers as a member of the Louisiana Governor’s
personal staff.
At the national level, Director Strickland has served as chairman of the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee for Minority Veterans and is a
past president of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans
Affairs (NASDVA). In 2007, Director Strickland was presented with the “Iron
Mike” award by NASDVA in Washington D.C. The “Iron Mike” award is presented to
men and women who have demonstrated great leadership in service to our nation’s
veterans.
Director Strickland is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and combat arms
officer, serving in infantry, aviation and armor assignments worldwide, in the
enlisted, non commissioned officer and commissioned officer ranks. During his
career, Director Strickland saw two combat tours in Vietnam and retired with
nearly 29 years of service in 1994. In 1995, he was appointed colonel in the
Louisiana National Guard by Governor Mike Foster with service on the governor’s
military advisory board.
Director Strickland was born in Arkansas and raised in northeast Louisiana. He
is a graduate of Hampton University, earning a B.A. in Political Science and a
M.Ed. from Auburn University. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Aerospace
Studies from the Air Force Command and General Staff College.
Director Strickland is a life member of the American Legion, the Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United States and of the Disabled American Veterans. |
