Honorary Education Diplomas Issued to Arizona Veterans

A very special ceremony was held on June 10, 2003 to honor some very special men. These men left high school many years ago to join the armed forces during World War II and the Korean Conflict. As a result, they never finished high school or received their diplomas. House bill 2549 was passed to permit the issuance of an Honorary Education Diploma to these veterans.

Gerald Corbin, Ambrose Dangerfield, William Lindsay, and Simon Martinez received their Honorary Education Diplomas during an emotional ceremony that was held at the Adult and Family Literacy Education’s office building on Virginia Ave. in Phoenix.

Honorary Diplomas issued

L to R:  Mike Fugate; Gerald Corbin; Simon Martinez; Ambrose Dangerfield; William Lindsay; Lee Sevy.

Also attending the ceremony were Barbara Corbin, Teresita Dangerfield, and Lena Lindsay, wives of three of the honorees. The ADVS State Approving Agency was represented by Michael Fugate, Administrator and Leland Sevy, Education Program Specialist. Presiding over the ceremony was Pat Loughrin, Associate Superintendent for Research, Standards and Accountability for the Arizona Department of Education, and Karen Liersch, State GED Administrator. The ceremony was organized by Bonnie Barclay, GED Testing Manager.

The Arizona State Legislature enacted ARS §15-203.28 to provide World War II and Korean War veterans who left school to enlist in the service with an honorary high school diploma.  With proper documentation, a diploma will be sent to the graduate, or he/she can opt to take part in the graduation exercises for the issuing high school.

In order to be eligible, the veteran must

  • have reached the age of 65;

  • currently reside in Arizona;

  • provide evidence that he/she enlisted in the Armed Forces of the United States before completing high school in a public or private school;

  • prove proof of honorable discharge for the Armed Forces of the United States.
