        What is Troops to Teachers?

Since its creation in 1994, Troops to Teachers has assisted over 11,000 eligible military personnel to transition to a new career as public school teachers. State Offices provide participants with counseling and assistance regarding certification requirements, routes to state certification, and employment leads. Pending availability of funds, financial assistance may be provided to eligible individuals as stipends up to $5K to help pay for teacher certification costs or as bonuses of $10K to teach in schools serving a high percentage of students from low-income families. Participants who accept the Stipend or Bonus must agree to teach for three years in targeted schools in accordance with the authorizing legislation.  Click here to view a listing of Arizona schools and see which are stipend and/or bonus eligible.

March Teacher Feature

Dan Kester has more than 14 years in the Air Force and Arizona Air National Guard. He has served in Germany, England and Italy as an Intelligence Technician with the EC-130 aircrafts. More recently Dan serves as a Senor Operator for the MQ-1 Predator remote aircraft system flying missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dan enjoys his “second career” as a teacher where he currently teaches Electronics and Digital Media at Rincon High School (Tucson USD) and serves as a district Career & Technical Education Mentor. I teach because each of the three careers that I've done in my life, Military, Firefighting, and Teaching, all gave me the sense of helping others. I've saved lives in the Fire Service and in the Military, but nothing compares to bringing a kid to life with teaching, finding in them something that they are good at doing.  Teaching Gives me that and the satisfaction of knowing that I have helped them for a lifetime."  Dan previously taught technology at Naylor Middle School.Dan also involves his students in Arizona’s BattleBots competition through the North American Robotics League Educational Experience
